In the il2sturmovik.com forums a similar thread started, but it's hard to get a serious discussion going when you're surrounded by russian teenies.

To me this is all lips service.
AMD and Nvidia are laughing their asses off when they see how sales grow faster than production can.
Sure, the big money is being made at the retailer side and not at the manufacturers (yet), but if AMD or Nvidia seriously would want to put an end on all of this, they easily could:
GPUs for decades were graphics cards.
Computing was an addon thrown into the game a few couple of years ago, and for gamers it plays no (99%) or little (1% max) role.
Split the cards into graphics and computing cards like they used to be up to 10 years ago, and the whole issue would be solved immediately.

They won't do that and now ask yourself "why" or even more, how serious they mean it when talking about how to get more cards to the gamers. Both AMD and Nvidia couldn't care less who actually grabs the cards as long as they do get grabbed.

Note that this issue is far from being over.
In China, electricity is cheap enough to support bitcoin mining even if the coin loses 99% of it's current value.
