Hi Bounder,

I've not done it myself but it is a common way of launching  a kite at the beginning of the season. Back in the day we would use a trailer with lockable wheels and brakes that would be applied when the aircraft took off, or the thing would just roll along the runway until stopped. It's not a difficult maneuver. At the end of the season it's very common for floatplanes to land on the grass between, or next to the runways. The aircraft slows quickly enough and no damage is done to the floats, as long as you don't hit too hard. Again, not a particularly difficult maneuver.
