Off line, BD, and my apologies for not including you and Dedly Tedly in my BOS Masters category.  I blame it on excessive smashing of head into dirt runways.

Got it; 12 hour download :)

The good news is that the devs are constantly doing tweaks and making improvements.  The bad news is you have to download them.  Keep on top of them so you don't build up to one huge D/L.  One bit of advice I would give is to have a go at the much-despised "unlock" campaign.  It's a good way to learn the sim whilst doing something more interesting than just flying around.

Hmmm! Got to the stage where I thought I was confidant enough to try fighting against AI😇

Well maybe I am  doing something wrong but in the quick missions all they seem to do when you get on their 6 is fly in tighter and tighter circles until you stall! They seem to be as unstable in flight as I am.....what's the trick Conker's?

Had a really good laugh when trying the IL2 escort mission......completed the mission and landed but when I tried to shut down the Yak had a mind of its own and went to full power.......lost throttle control and watched myself try and climb a tree😣........so the question is.......do you have to let all the AI land before you to complete the mission....if so.....do you have to use key operated commands to tell them all to land?

Hope it's raining Conkers so you can answer.

I have to confess that I just chickened out of landing and grabbed only half the points.  When I had my first proper go at this sim it was like trying to land on the moon - slightly too quick and you'd bounce 50 feet, so I quickly gave up on the idea (get 100 points for landing, or none for crashing, as against 50 for just quitting at the designated waypoint)   I wouldn't put great store in the AI's ability to fight you, or in its propensity to follow commands, to be honest.

Hello all,

Fighting the ai can be very frustrating at first; try to use out-of-plane maneuvers i.e. high/low yo-yos to keep your energy up and stay above 350 km/h. Once you are in the saddle, the real fun begins, trying to hit the bandit!  :P A few hot will usually produce white vapour or smoke which means a fuel or minor coolant leak. If you get black smoke that means the bandit is pretty much out of the fight since engine failure will soon occur.

You don't have to wait for the ai to land, it's probably one of your controllers or keyboard spiking. I'm glad you chaps are trying the new sim out, I see I have a lot of work to do when I get back... ;)

Until March 9th, when I start my 777 conversion course, huzzah!

Ted........
Points.......what are they? Never seen any mentioned and there is no file recording any missions when I open the mission records.
Conky.......you are probably right that the key entries are going mad occasionally. I am still getting a "cannot read the memory" message when trying to shut down BOS so there is clearly a problem somewhere.
Sounds like Woof is having issues also with reliability of controls.
They have a long way to go to get this sim to 1946 playability although the detail is clearly so much better.

Points?! Sounds like War Thunder!
Installed, but my kit struggles with it even on low settings, inducing slight nausea.
Quick question if I may. Having just purchased this direct from the IL2 website, will it be in 'vanilla' state or will my version include all updates I wonder?

Ignore last post. It is updated to 1.107 which is a blessing.

Chaps,

If you do the "campaign" in SP you gain experience points (XP) when you complete a mission.  You get more for kills an so on.  The score is doubled if you use full-switch settings and if you land a serviceable crate at the end there is another bonus.  The XP you accrue goes towards the unlocking of planes, skins, and loadouts. Now, before you all throw up your hands in horror at this gamification (which is exactly what it is and what it is designed to be), it is worth treating these campaigns as just tutorials, or practice, rather than ignoring them, IMO.

BD - there is an option in settings>camera for cinematic view.  Make sure this is unticked as it makes everything blurry when you turn your head

Hi Bounder,

Although the devs are still hard a'tweaking, there are still some stability issues with the sim, particularly when flying online.

I am actually enjoying the sp campaign, especially now that summer/autumn maps are used in the missions. You have the ability to unlock everything right from the get go - no going back if you do, but I will fly the fighters and IL2 until I get all their unlocks, then just unlock the stuff for the bombers. By the way, unlocking everything at the start will only unlock the equipment options, not the skins, so you'll still have to fly the campaign to get all of them. Luckily, there are a number of very good user-made skins that can be downloaded instead although they are not yet usable in mp.

Conky, Bounder, Bluey, oh, Masters, hear my cries...finally got the pitch and mixture sorted on my ch throttle, and this afternoon taxied and flew the 190 easy peasy, both t/o and landing...tonight, however, every time i tried to get the tail up the damn thing rolled to the left and nothing would stop it.  Crashed every time.  All controls checked correct visually. Have watched Requiem and checked the hand book.  No help.  Any thoughts?  Torque troubles?  Wrist slitting starts at 0900 tomorrow.  Thank you.

I cannot reproduce the problem so I guess it is a key/joystick issue at your end. Have tried a few things that may make trim difficult at take-off but nothing that would cause the loss of control you are getting.

Thanks for the effort, Bounder.  I'll keep at it.

By the way Woof.....the yellow balloons in the Campaigns are waypoints if you have "Normal" settings selected. Makes Navigation like using GPS!

Love the guys walking around the airfields.....great detail. Have managed a few successful missions in the 109.

This evening Bounder and Ted and I had a great old thrash around in BOS in 190s, and Ted, brilliant chap that he is, figured out that I was holding the tail wheel lock in place far too long on take-off, resulting in deadly roll to the left.  Tip: raise the tail at 100 kms.  Thank you, Ted.  And all is forgiven for blowing me out of the sky whilst trying to attract my attention with shots across my bow.  Some people are just natural born killers.   :-*

Well, I only worked it out having done it myself several times.  It had struck as a weird design that one should have to hold the stick fully back whilst trying to take off, but I forgot all about it during the titanic struggle to get off the ramp and onto the runway, and then the gargantuan battle to keep the thing going straight down said runway.  Which leads me on to why I should re-apologize for this...

Quote from: =CfC=Woof on February 17, 2016, 01:46:59 AMblowing me out of the sky whilst trying to attract my attention with shots across my bow.

It must have taken Woof and I a good ten minutes to get our respective crates airborne, with Bounder observing from on high, trying to work out how we could make such a simple thing so hard.  Once all aloft, we decided to make use of the facilities (we were on a MP practice map) and set out for the action.  We immediately lost sight of each other.  No icons on the map, a German-speaking compass, and featureless steppes made navigation mighty tricky.  Hence the next half hour involved us all flying around separately trying to find some sort of landmark and then direct the others to it.  When we finally arrived in some sort of proximity, Bounder and I could see Woof, but not he us.  So I, brilliant chap that I am, thought I would attract his attention by firing "near" to him.  I barely touched the trigger but Woof's machine instantly spewed black smoke, rolled inverted and plunged into a dachau.

Despite that,  it really was a fun evening.  BoS does a great job in making you feel that you are flying a high-performance plane with a great big engine in front of you.  Even the teeth-grindingly frustrating taxiing reinforces that sensation, and I am beginning to understand how one approaches that.
